Week 1 Recap

Who needs the Astros when you have the George Jetsons?!

The George Jetsons started off season 15 with a bang Tuesday night with a solid win against the smaSHErs and a grinder against BOHICA who both seem to be sporting a new look this season, more talent. Notables on the night were the farewell (until he makes the drive from College Station next week) of Greenlight, Wildthing and Jamal (all of which are the same person). Jeremy made the trip all the way from College Station just to play some GJ softball (actually that's not true but we'll go with it anyway). So he was going to make the trip worth while and he did so in spades. Another notable on the night was the trifecta of the fat guys getting thrown out at third. All three of them managed to do it that night, and all did it with their own distinctive style while getting dirty. And the most notable of all was the last night we'll see El Jefe at the Gilruth for quite a while. The only downer on the night was that El Jefe couldn't join us on the field because of a run in with a spastic escaped lunatic on the coed field the previous Thursday. Here's to you El Jefe, hope you heal quickly and next time you're in town on a Tuesday, make sure you bring your shiny shorts with you.

Web Gem(s)
I don't remember which games these were in, but Clem made 3 ridiculous catches on short popups, dying quails and Texas leaguers that would have fallen in against any other team in the league. Clem some how some way got to them on a full sprint, with his back to the infield and made the snag each time. Once was spectacular enough, but 3 times? That's just absurd.

The UHaul, Unhook the Trailer Award(s)
An unprecedented 3 of these awards are being awarded for Tuesday night's performance. The first goes to Nick, who on a ground ball to Short thought he could take third with Uncle Pappy taking home. Nick thought, why would the first baseman make a longer throw at a faster runner? Apparently the first baseman didn't think Nick was as fast as Nick thought he was, and he got gunned out at third by a healthy margin. I'll leave out the part where Nick thought we was safe anyway because of the evasive maneuver he pulled going into the bag, because that's all irrelevant at Gilruth and he new it. The second was Uncle Pappy's aggressive rounding of third to draw a throw and perhaps get some free runs across. Well, he drew a throw alright, but it was way more strong and accurate then he expected and was tagged out going in head first back to third. I'll also leave out the part where Uncle Pappy thought he was safe because he thought his hand got in under the tag. He should know better then anyone how calls are made at Gilruth. And last but certainly not least, the third goes to Husky Ichiro, who turns triples into doubles better then anyone in the league. Well this time he tried to turn a triple into a triple and got nailed at third. He forgot to run until he rounded second and by that time it was too late. He should have known better then to listen to the collective base coaching from the bleachers. Oh and there was no doubt he was out.

Smashers 5
George Jetsons 11

The GJ played a solid game both on offense and defense, scoring in every inning and crooked numbers in 5/6 of them. Allowing only 2 single runs in the 1st and 4th inning until they managed to string a few hits together to score 3 in the 7th. However, as they say, it was too little too late. The defense was the story of this game, with the offense being solid but not overwhelming, the defense really sealed the deal. Contributions from Clem's great catches, and all around solid play from the outfield keeping their big hitter contained (yes, they smashets have big hitters now), and DJ playing out standing third defending the slow roller like he was Brooks Robinson or something put the game on easy street. For playing great defense and doing a great job filling in at lead off, going 3-4 with 2 RBI and 2R, the first MVJ of season 15 goes to Kroeger

George Jetsons 7
BOHICA 3

The GJs were on cruise control in this game even though it was tied for most of it. Perhaps the GJs don't fear BOHICA since they were 8-3 going into the game Tuesday, or maybe it's just hard to take a team seriously who's name is BOHICA (if you don't know what it means, email me and I'll tell you, I'm trying to keep this PG13). What ever the reason the bats went to sleep for a while until DJ woke them up in the 6th inning. Wildthing Hart made his pitching return and was dominant walking none and keeping the opposing hitters off balance with his crafty mound presence (even if it was on accident, it worked). With his solid pitching the defense continued to play top notch and keep the sore tied through 5. That's where DJ stepped in
with what would prove to be the game winning home run on a hard hit to center field that split the outfielders and went all the way to the fence. If this would have been more then DJ's first hit of the game he might have gotten MVJ consideration for what followed and received an unprecedented MVJ sweep of the night, however he didn’t. As DJ rounds second and heads to third the fans on the bleachers start yelling for DJ to do his patented base running move (much like a cartoon character has a catch phrase). The Fans were yelling "flip him off, flip him off" referring to DJ flipping off the third base coach who is usually telling him to hold at third with no outs yet in the inning. Everyone saw it coming so early that DJ had time to flip off the third base coach multiple times before he passed him. And to top it off the third base coach was waving him in to score. As hilarious as that was, the MVJ is going to have to go to the anchorman, for going 2-2 with 2R, and if the 3 batter in front of him hadn't all gone 0-2, he might have has some RBI opportunities as well, Nelson

Good recap, Moose.

I'm glad that I was able to witness a pair of solid GJ victories before leaving for Austin. I will definitely keep up with the team on the web site and the forum as the Jetsons march towards their first-ever championship this fall.

Keep up the good work!
